Subject: Computer Science Unit: Two

Class: 6 Topic: Processing hardware and Output Hardware

Time: 45 Minutes Period: 4th

Number of Students: School: Adarsha Secondary School, Layaku, Thimi

Specific Objectives[edit | edit source]

At end of the class

  • Define processing unit
  • define output hardware
  • recognize output hardware
  • explain the functions of ALU, CU and MU.

Teaching Materials[edit | edit source]

  1. Whiteboard and markers
  2. Image of computer hardware
  3. Internet access for multimedia resources

Introduction :[edit | edit source]

  • Begin with a brief review of the importance of computer hardware.
  • Introduce the main objective: to understand processing hardware and output devices.
  • Discuss why processing is a crucial function in a computer system.

Processing Hardware :[edit | edit source]

Arithmetic Logical Unit (ALU):[edit | edit source]

    • Explain the role of the ALU and it is used to perform mathematical and logical operations.
    • Discuss the importance of ALU.

Control Unit (CU):[edit | edit source]

  • Define CU as the component that manages and coordinates the execution of instructions.

Memory Unit (MU)[edit | edit source]

  • Define MU as the part of the CPU that stores data and instructions that are actively being used.
  • Emphasize that the MU acts as the "working memory" of the computer, providing fast access to data and instructions needed for processing.

Output Devices :[edit | edit source]

  1. Monitors/Displays:
    • Discuss the different types of monitors (LCD, LED, OLED) and their characteristics.
    • Explain resolution, refresh rate, and color depth.
  2. Printers:
    • Introduce various types of printers (inkjet, laser, dot matrix).
    • Discuss their functions, advantages, and disadvantages.
  3. Speakers and Audio Output:
    • Explain how speakers or headphones serve as output devices for audio.
    • Discuss the importance of sound cards in processing audio signals.

Interactive Activity :[edit | edit source]

  • Engage students in an interactive activity. Show them different processing hardware components (CPU, RAM) and output hardware (monitors, printers). Ask them to identify and explain the functions of each component.

Homework/Extended Learning:[edit | edit source]

Assign a task where students research and compare different types of CPUs, highlighting their features and performances. Additionally, they can explore emerging trends in display technologies or advancements in audio output hardware.

Assessment:[edit | edit source]

Assess students through their participation in class discussions, their ability to identify and explain processing hardware and output devices, and their understanding demonstrated in any assigned projects or homework.
