Specific Objectives

At end of the class

  • Students will gain an understanding of secondary memory in computers, including its types, functions, and significance in data storage.
  • Differentiate between primary memory and secondary memory.

Materials Needed:

  1. Whiteboard and markers.
  2. Examples of secondary memory devices .
  3. Handouts summarizing key points

Introduction :

  • Begin with a brief review of primary memory (RAM) and its temporary nature.
  • Introduce the concept of secondary memory as a form of non-volatile, long-term storage.
  • Discuss the importance of secondary memory in retaining data even when the computer is powered off.

Main Content :

  1. Types of Secondary Memory (10 minutes):
    • Present different types of secondary memory, including hard disk drives (HDD), solid-state drives (SSD), Pen drives, memory cards, and optical disk (CDs, DVDs).
    • Discuss the characteristics and advantages/disadvantages of each type.
  2. Functions of Secondary Memory (10 minutes):
    • Explain the primary functions of secondary memory, such as storing data, applications, and the operating system.
    • Discuss how it facilitates data transfer between devices and the significance of long-term storage.
  3. Storage Capacity and Performance (5 minutes):
    • Discuss how storage capacity varies among different secondary memory devices.

Activity :

  • Break the class into small groups and ask them about different between secondary memory and primary memory.
  • Ask them to discuss and present the advantages and disadvantages of their assigned device.

Homework:
