Subject: Computer Science                                         Unit: Two

Class: 6                                                                       Topic: Introduction to computer software

Time: 15 Minutes                                                         Period: 2nd

Number of Students: 15                                               School: ABC School

Objective:

  • Students will understand the concept of computer software and differentiate between system software and application software.

Materials Needed:

Introduction (3 minutes):

  • Begin with a quick review of the previous class's topic, ensuring students remember the basics of hardware.
  • Introduce the term "software" and explain that it is the set of instructions that tell a computer what to do.

Definition of Software:

  • Define software as the programs, applications, and data that instruct a computer to perform tasks.
  1. Types of Software:
  • Briefly explain the two main types of software: system software and application software.
  • System Software: Discuss how it manages hardware components and provides a platform for running applications. Mention examples like operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux).
  • Application Software: Explain how these are programs designed for specific tasks or user applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop).
  1. Interactive Example:
  • Share a brief demonstration of opening an application (e.g., a word processor) and performing a simple task.

Activity (3 minutes):

  • Ask students to quickly jot down one example of system software and one example of application software.

Conclusion (2 minutes):

  • Recap the key points: definition of software, types (system and application), and examples.
  • Encourage students to explore different software on their own and think about how software enhances the functionality of computers.
