1. Specific Objective:

 
Different types of an Operating System

At the end of this lesson, students will be able:

  • to list different types of an operating system,
  • to demonstrate batch OS with its diagram, advantages & limitations,
  • to explain about Time Sharing/ Multitasking operating system,

3. Teaching Learning Activities:

  • Enter the classroom, and motivate students before starting the lesson for their concentration on the lesson, and then write todays topic on the board.
  • Begin the class by asking some questions to students related to today's topic.
  • Open the presentation slide, show a list of OS types, and briefly introduce why there are various types of operating systems.
  • Begin with the introduction of Batch OS, relate its features to the historical evolution of operating systems, give examples, and explain how it works through the diagrammatical representation mentioned in the slide.
  • Ask if they understand about batch OS or not. If yes, then summarize Batch OS along with advantages and limitations and proceed further with another type of OS.
  • Begin with similarities between two types of OS, i.e., multitasking & time sharing OS, explain about them with their examples and real-world usage scenarios.
  • Ask students some questions to know what they understand after the completion of the explanation and where they get confused.
  • Summarize the lesson in brief, clearing students confusion too.

4. Assessment:

During the session, ask questions like,

  • Is there anyone who can list the different types of OS?
  • Give some examples of time sharing & multitasking OS.
  • The OS that you use on your system belongs to which category: Batch OS or Multitasking?

  1. Explain Batch OS in detail, along with an example, diagram, advantages, & limitations.
  2. What do you mean by time-sharing/multitasking OS? Explain in depth with examples.
